When you are playing paintball agreesively, you tend to do things that you should and sometimes things that you should not. When you dive or slide (or if you are clumsy, trip) you have a potential for inguring your knees. You should always protect them by wearing good knee pads. Most knee pads in paintball have been used and abused by the professionals so you know they will take whatever you can throw at them.
